Web Filtering

Under CIPA, web content considered obscene and/or pornographic must be filtered before reaching computers used by students. This is typically done by a a variety of strategies, including a combination of black listing and white listing of specific websites.

Black Listing
Specifically listing sites that are blocked, known to contain content that are inappropriate, such as the Playboy website, but also blocking sites with specific vocabulary, such as "XXX"

White Listing
Although black listing for some words can be effective, some blacklisting can block access to websites with educational content, such as articles about breast cancer. Filters can allow for access to such such sites, but typically they must be specifically named as exceptions.
