In June 2008, the Manchester School District began purchasing the Asus EEE PC 4G for teacher use.

The operating system is called Linux -- the specific “flavor” is called Xandros. If you are looking for software, you will need to know this because it will not run Mac or Windows software. Even though it is not exactly like the Mac or Windows, much of the interface works in similar ways, using icons, menus, and dialog boxes.

The computer has a 7” screen, and can be attached to an external monitor or a data projector. It has is a built-in web camera, a microphone and stereo speakers, and can be plugged into external speakers or a headset. It has three USB ports so that you can attach a USB mouse and full-sized keyboard. File storage on the computer is on a built-in 4 gigabyte flash drive -- not a hard drive. Most of that space is take up by the operating system and software. You will probably want to have a USB storage drive to keep your own files, especially if you try to do much of anything with multimedia (pictures, sound, video, etc.)

The computer has 512MB of RAM. A fully-charged battery is listed as giving 3-3.5 hours of use, but will depend on actual operations and configurations.

There is a built-in WiFi card. Ports to connect external devices are located on either side of the computer:
