Connecting the Asus EEE via WiFi
From Tech-Help
Turning the WiFi card on and off: Holding down the Function Key (marked Fn) and hitting the F2 key (on the top of the keyboard) will switch the WiFi card on and off. A light under the WiFi icon on the lower right corner of the top surface of the EEE will shine blue when WiFi is active, and will be off when it is inactive.
NOTE: If you are not on-line, you can maximize your battery charge by switching the WiFi off.
Setting up a network connection:
- In the Internet tab, although you can click on the Wireless Networks icon to view all the visible wireless access points, you have more options if you click intead on the Network icon and make a Connection Configuration for each place where you connect to a network.
- Click Create to set up a new connection.
- The connection wizard will step you through the process. Select Local Area Network if you are connecting to the network with an Ethernet cable, or Local Area Network - Wireless if you are connecting wirelessly.
- The WiFi card is the hardware you will select next -- The Atheros Communications, Inc at ath0 is the built-in WiFi card that you want.
- Select Dynamic IP address (DHCP) for the Address Type.
- You can click on Browse Wireless Networks to select a visible wireless network, but if the WiFi hub is invisible (some networks do it this way), you will need to know the name of the network and insert it manually here. (The Mode and Transfer Ratescan be left at Auto.)
- If a password is required to connect to the network, you must then check Enable Encryption. The administrator of the WiFi will provide you with information -- whether the encryption is WEP or WPA, and what the password is.
- It’s a good idea to provide a descriptive name of the connection. If you are primarily using the EEE in one location, you can check this as the default connection on start-up.
