                                                          Introduction                                                                                                                      

 

We’Äôll see colors, flowers, and burritos!  Cinco de Mayo is here and our second grade class is going on a field trip to Mexico to join in on the festivities.  We are going to find out why Cinco de Mayo has been so important in Mexico.  So pack your bags and I’Äôll pack the time machine; there will be no time for siestas!  Vamos a Mexico!

 




                                                                     The Task                                                                                                           

 

Bienvenidos a Mexico! Now that we’Äôre here, it’Äôs time for you to start exploring.  You will be divided into field trip groups of 4.  Within your group, you will search the sites to look up the history of Cinco de Mayo and find information about the Cinco de Mayo celebrations today. You will complete the following activities:

1.   answer history questions,

2.   create a poster advertising a Cinco de Mayo celebration,

3.   learn to decorate for the festivities, and

4.   make a Mexican food

To accomplish the task, you will need to completed the following 4 activities:

Activity 1:  You will need a questions page to fill in the answers (Don’Äôt forget to print it out!).  To find information about  the history and culture aspects of Cinco de Mayo check out these sites!

 

                                                                      

 Activity 2:  The Mexicans have enjoyed you so much that they want others just like you to come see their country and celebrate Cinco de Mayo with them.  They have asked you to make a poster to advertise the holiday and make tourists want to come.  Look at the following sites and the ones above to get some ideas!

Activity 3:  We just arrived back to the U.S.A. and now we are going to celebrate our own Cinco de Mayo.  To do this we need decorations!  Your group will pick one decoration to make and display in the classroom.  Here are some to choose from!

   Make a paper flower

       Make a yarn picture

   Make a poncho

   Make the Mexican flag

   Make a pinata

 

Activity 4:  What is a party without food?  Each person in the  group must choose a Mexican food and prepare this for our celebration.  Discuss with the others in your group which of the following foods you each will prepare at home for the class fiesta.

Conclusion
                                                                                                                                                                      

Cinco de Mayo is celebrated in Mexico and the United States. The festivities represent the struggle and victory that the Mexican soldiers had in the battle against the French.  By completing this Webquest, you should have a better understanding of the history of Cinco de Mayo and why it is important to Mexican Culture.  I hope you have enjoyed your travels!

SS Curriculum Standard 3. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the relationship of the United States to other nations and the role of the United States in world affairs.

     *    Explain why it is important for nations to work together to resolve problems.

LA Curriculum Standard 5. Students will demonstrate competence in using the interactive language processes of reading, writing, speaking, listening, and viewing, to gather and organize information in a variety of subject areas.

  • Identify information needed and develop a strategy to find it.
  • Demonstrate the ability to read, listen to, view, and understand a variety of materials including literary/narrative (stories and poems), content/informational (factual articles and presentations), and practical works (directions and how-to-do-it books).
  • Identify the main idea and supporting details in written, spoken, audio-visual, and graphic materials.
