Introduction

What makes an ecosystem work?

You have just been introduced to one particular ecosystem.  You have discovered that the world that we live in is much more complex than you could ever realize.  Our environment is very diverse.  In the Deciduous Forest you can find things such as deciduous trees, fertile soil, chipmunks, squirrels, mosquitoes, spiders, frogs, and much more.  We also live in a unique environment because we have warm and cold seasons.  Have you ever wondered about how plants and animals survive in the desert?  What about the plant and animal life in the oceans?  The rainforest also has an assortment of different plants and animals.  Have you ever imagined the complex life in the grasslands or the frigid environment of the Arctic?

The Task

You will be working with a group of 2-3 students researching an animal from a particular ecosystem.  After you have chosen your animal you will then become that animal and try to find out which ecosystem best fits its needs. In doing this you will learn a lot about your animals ecosystem and be able to find answers to the following questions:

                         1) What ecosystem does your animal live in?

                       2) Where is this ecosystem located?

                       3) What kinds of plants (flora) live there?

                       4) What kinds of animals (fauna) live there?

                       5) What is the climate like?

The Process

First you will be assigned to a group.

Each person in your group will have a role:

1. Recorder

Responsible for taking notes during this WebQuest activity.

2.Tech. Support

Responsible for the computer (includes setup, typing, and clean up).

3. Efficiency Expert

Responsible for reminding group to stay on task and complete the given assignment during the time allotted.

.       Each group will pick one animal from the list below:

o     Kinkajou

o     John Dory

o     Jerboa

o     Meerkat

o     Ermine

.       You will use the animal links provided to find out which ecosystem your animal best survives in.

.       Once you have determined which ecosystem best fits the needs of your animal you will need to research that ecosystem using the website given to you below.

.       As you research you will need to make sure that you are answering the 5 Key Questions (listed above) and your recorder is writing down the information you have found.

.       Once you have answered the 5 Key Questions and recorded the answers, you will create a book about your ecosystem including the following pages:

Conclusion

During this Ecosystem WebQuest students will have learned about the location of many different ecosystems and different plants (flora), and animals (fauna) that live there as well as the various climates.  They will have completed several different tasks that will enable them to build cooperative learning skills and gain organizational, research, and presentation abilities.
