Introduction
Jack
and his mother are once again without food. The goose has stopped laying
golden eggs and the money is gone. Jack’s mother sent him to town to sell
the singing harp. She only knows one song and they are quite tired of it.
On his way, Jack meets the same man that
gave him the magic beans for his cow. You remember? The one that led him to
the giant’s home? Jack begged the man to trade again.
He agrees to trade Jack three beans.
These are also magic but in a different way. They can grow any plant at all.
Jack needs only to wish for the plant he would like as he is planting each
one.
The Task
Your
job is to help Jack decide which three plants he would like to wish for.
You will learn about the parts of a plant, what a plant needs to grow, and
the foods we get from plants. You will use this information to suggest
three plants that will provide great food for Jack and his mother.
The Process
1. Read about
the different parts of a plant
by clicking here:
2. Visit The Great Plant Escape to label
the parts of a plant that you have just read about.
3. Draw and
color a picture showing all six parts of a plant. Remember to label this
too!
4. Read about
the things a plant needs to live
by clicking here:
5. Play Root
Race.
6. Visit Funschool to show how a seed grows.
7. Visit The Great Plant Escape to see the
plant foods we eat and which part of the plant they are.
8. Visit Plant Parts Salad to make a
salad using different parts of a plant.
9. Draw and
color a food for each part of the plant. Your teacher will give you the
paper.
10.
Write a story telling which three plants Jack chose. Be sure
to tell why you suggested them. Remember Bear and Hare from Tops &
Bottoms!

Conclusion
Now you know about the different parts of a plant and what they do. You
know how we can use these parts from certain plants for food. You also know
what a plant needs to survive. Ask your parents to help you grow something
at home to use these skills. Why not choose something you can eat? Happy
growing!
